Maple Block Meat Co.

I've wanted to try this BBQ joint out for some time, and yesterday the stars were aligned. I happened to be in the vicinity of the Maple Block Meat Company right before closing time.

I walked in five minutes before closing and just wanted a sandwich. I looked at their chalkboard and that's where I saw the special: Old School Brisket sandwich and a drink for nine bucks. How could I say no to that?

I asked for the sauce on the side, because that's what I do when I order BBQ — I want to taste the meat. The delightful woman behind the counter let me know it wouldn't be a problem. Now it was time to order a drink, and I was thinking about the fountain drink options. She let me know the drink could be lemonade, iced tea, or a handmade soda. I got an ear-to-ear grin and ordered a handmade ginger soda. It was almost worth the nine bucks all by itself. Delicious.

The brisket was tender, maybe a little too tender — like it had been chopped and stewed a bit in some fat drippings. I was okay with it because it was pretty flavorful. I could taste the smoke and the meat.

I decided to stop picking at the meat and take a bite of it as a sandwich. Things went a little off course at that point. All that juicy, beefy brisket flavor was completely neutralized by the bun. It was as if the DJ just bumped the turntable in the middle of your favorite jam. At that point I had to add the sauce, which supplemented enough flavor and moisture to bring the full BBQ flavor back to my brisket sandwich party.

I'm not sure how often they run this special, but on this day it was worth the price of admission. I plan on returning for a more thorough review of this restaurant and possibly meeting with the pitmaster. In the meantime, try their lunch special.
